A Model
That Works

The Recovery Kentucky Center Model combines safe housing, peer leadership, and accountability to deliver lasting results. It’s a proven, scalable approach for addressing substance use disorder across the Commonwealth.

Peer Social Model

The peer social model of recovery is a long-term, person-centered approach to substance use disorder recovery that combines safe, structured housing with peer support, community accountability, and meaningful life engagement. Rooted in the Recovery Kentucky tradition, this model emphasizes that individuals recover not in isolation, but through mutual support, shared experience, and responsibility within a community.

In practice, it means:

  • Individuals live in supportive recovery residences where they can stay up to 24 months, focusing on stability, sobriety, and independence.

  • Residents are supported by peer mentors, people with lived experience, who provide guidance, encouragement, and accountability.

  • The model honors each person’s unique history by asking “What has been tried before?” and tailoring support accordingly, rather than offering one-size-fits-all treatment.

  • Recovery is reinforced through shared living, structured routines, community participation, and connections to work, education, and mutual-help programs.

This approach has been shown to help individuals become self-sufficient, tax-paying, and law-abiding citizens by breaking cycles of crisis, dependence, and repeated public system interactions.

RKHP Core Commitments

Recovery Housing is a Public Safety Solution

Recovery housing is a proven, cost-effective strategy that reduces homelessness, crime, and repeated emergency system use. By providing a stable environment for individuals rebuilding their lives, RKHP strengthens communities, protects taxpayer dollars, and promotes self-reliance.

Peer-Led, Responsibility-Based Recovery

Our programs are led by those who have walked the path of recovery and now give back by guiding others. This model instills accountability, personal growth, and community engagement—fostering long-term independence and reducing reliance on public systems.

Results-Driven and Fiscally Responsible

With over 17 years of independently measured outcomes, RKHP demonstrates an impressive return on investment—saving $3.14 for every $1 spent. We prioritize what works: reducing recidivism, improving employment, and strengthening families, all while reducing government burden.

Fair Access, Smart Stewardship

We work to ensure access to recovery housing for those who need it most, not by expanding entitlements, but by building efficient, accountable systems. Our approach supports Kentuckians committed to recovery, regardless of their financial starting point.

Strong Advocacy for Sustainable Reform

RKHP partners with policymakers and industry leaders to ensure long-term stability. By pursuing strategies like an Independent Practice Association (IPA), we are working to responsibly access Medicaid reimbursement and secure stable, non-duplicative funding streams.

Faith, Family, Work, and Freedom

We believe recovery thrives where people have purpose. RKHP focuses on restoring lives through family reunification, meaningful work, responsible living, and renewed community involvement—core American values that promote lasting freedom from addiction.
